Almaden Valley History

Almaden Valley, or what is more commonly referred to as simply Almaden, has a long history. Its origins go back as early as 1820 when there were several attempts at mining the area for silver.

During the California Gold Rush until 1975, Mercury was extracted from the New Almaden mines. Many of the names seen throughout the city retain their mercury mine themes and include streets such as Silver Mine Drive and Silver Lode Lane.

The New Almaden mines closed after 135 years of operation, but Santa Clara County Parks administrators weren't about to give up on this expansive property. They purchased it in order that the vast acres could be transformed into a regional park - and they knew just who would enjoy coming here! Almaden Quicksilver County Park opened to the public several years ago following an extensive clean-up process which has since declared all aspects of historic landmarks (including two California Historical Landmarks).
