The Santa Clara Valley meets the lower slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains about 60 miles south of San Francisco, in Santa Clara County's southwestern corner. Los Gatos is a historic town in Santa Clara County. Sebastian Peralta and Jose Hernandez were awarded a land concession for a 6,600-acre ranch by the Mexican government in 1840. Due to the howls of mountain lions prowling in the night, early settlers dubbed Los Gatos La Rinconada de Los Gatos “Cat's Corner”. The ranch's 100 acres were chosen as a townsite in 1868. The town was founded in 1887, and by 1890, it had grown to 1,652 residents. The city had grown to over 4,000 acres with a population of over 11,750 people when the first General Plan was authorized in 1963.
The Town had expanded to 9 square miles with a population of 24,350 people when the first General Plan was amended in 1971. Los Gatos had a population of 27,820 people in 1984, covering approximately 10 square miles. In a 14-square-mile area, the town's population is estimated to be 30,391. While new development accounted for the majority of growth in the 1970s, annexations, in-fill development, and shifting demographics accounted for the majority of change in the 1980s and 1990s.

NUMU New Museum Los Gatos: The museum, which is located at 106 E. Main St., merges an older local art museum with a local history museum into a 6000-square-foot "New Museum."
Testarossa Winery stone cellar: Testarossa Winery, located at 300A College Ave, is a lovely old winery site that is only a half-mile walk from downtown Los Gatos. The atmosphere is old, uncrowded, and pleasant. They have wine tasting, an extensive stone cellar, and a good place to picnic on the outside patio.
Billy Jones Railroad Park: This fantastic children's park is not to be missed if you have younger children. A modest engine house, station, clock tower, and turntable are all part of the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad, which is located at 110 Blossom Hill Rd. The open cars are pulled by a small, adorable, yet authentic steam locomotive. The "2 Spot" steam engine was built in 1905 and originally served the Venice California Municipal Railway for 21 years.
